Dr. Saibe Kılınç explained the symptoms of iron deficiency in children and the precautions to be taken.
She said that iron deficiency is an issue for almost everybody in recent years. Noting that it was not taken very seriously at first sight, she said that it is an important health problem with extremely vital consequences. Dr. Kılınç pointed out that iron deficiency, which is observed at a high rate especially in women, poses an important threat for children. Stating that there is an iron deficiency under many health problems from the loss of appetite to growth retardation, palpitation to learning disability. Dr. Kılınç said, “It can even cause children to become moody and even have cry crises. For this reason, it is imperative that parents notice the signs of iron deficiency at an early stage and undergo doctor control and take necessary precautions.”
Stating that the child’s entire body mechanism is affected by iron deficiency, Dr. Kılınç said, “The growth of the child who has iron deficiency slows down, becomes immobile, and his complaints such as fatigue and weakness are increasing day by day. One of the first visible signs of iron deficiency in children is the fading of their colors. “Cracks in the rim, shape changes and breakage in the nails, blue color changes in the white part of the eye can also be indicators that enable the child to understand this problem from the outside.”

Dr. Kılınç also noted that dizziness, tinnitus, tongue structure disorders, painful swallowing, anorexia, constipation, palpitations and difficulty in breathing are among other important problems that children may experience. Development steps such as sitting, walking and speaking may be delayed and learning difficulties may be experienced. Especially in school children, there is distraction and the success rate in language and mathematics classes is decreasing.”
CAUSE OF CRYING CRISIS MAY BE IRON DEFICIENT
Pointing out that iron deficiency can make mood and behavioral changes as well as many structural effects, Dr. Kılınç said, “Children are particularly dependent on their mother, shy or vice versa, and they can have meaningless crying crises. Although the reason for this situation is not fully revealed, the body can react differently in this way when it feels deficient. From time to time, children can try to eat things like soil, lime, pencil tip, wall paint, ice. This is the pica syndrome, in which the habit of bringing non-food substances into the mouth is experienced. Although the cause of Pika syndrome is not known precisely, it can be experienced as a result of iron, calcium, zinc, vitamin B1 and B6 deficiencies and psychosocial development disorders. However, there is an uncertain detail at this point that whether the child is eating soil because of iron deficiency or the iron deficiency is coming from eating soil. “
