What are the Diseases Caused by Air Conditioners?

Used air conditioners can be beneficial or harmful to human health. They cause influenza, some viral upper and lower respiratory infections, muscle aches, muscle stiffness, facial paralysis, and pneumonia, which develops from bacteria in air conditioners. Children, the elderly, and those with chronic sinusitis and bronchitis related to the upper and lower respiratory tract are especially at risk from air conditioner use. The cold air from air conditioners and the dust they release into the air can trigger complaints and attacks, especially in people with allergies, leading to asthma attacks and severe dry coughs. Therefore, people with allergies should avoid sudden temperature changes.

Legionnaires' Disease

The disease is caused by bacteria in the air conditioning system. This bacteria thrives in the air conditioner's filter systems at the right humidity and temperature, and from there, it is dispersed into the ambient air. The disease is not transmitted from person to person.

Improperly positioned air conditioners or low-quality air conditioners are harmful to health. Steam and water accumulation in cooling systems cause bacterial and fungal growth. This is called sick building syndrome. People with this syndrome typically complain of symptoms such as irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, general health problems, skin irritation, and loss of smell and taste. Furthermore, scientific authorities have proven that air conditioners can have significant health benefits if used responsibly.

What Precautions Should Be Taken to Minimize the Harmful Effects of Air Conditioners?

It is crucial to perform regular and thorough maintenance and cleaning of air conditioners every year. A bacterial filter should be used. 25 degrees Celsius is the optimal temperature. Care should be taken to avoid overcooling the environment. Avoid direct exposure to the air blown by the air conditioners.
