Early Diagnosis Saves Lives

Mersin System Surgical Medical Center Radiology Specialist Dr. Birsen Dokgöz stated that early diagnosis and early intervention are lifesaving for most patients, and emphasized the importance of ultrasound in early diagnosis, especially for rapidly spreading cancers such as breast and colon cancer.

Mersin System Surgical Medical Center Radiology Specialist Dr. Birsen Dokgöz stated that early diagnosis with ultrasound is of great importance. Dr. said that ultrasound is a diagnostic method that allows early intervention in diseases in modern medicine. Dr. Dokgöz said, “Any part of the body can be examined in detail with ultrasound, which allows for the creation of images using sound waves. While people over the age of 40 should have their cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels tested annually, an ultrasound examination at a fully equipped clinic is often lifesaving.”

DEATHS CAN BE PREVENTED

Dr. Dokgöz stated that sudden deaths due to cardiovascular diseases can be prevented if conditions that may affect vascular health are identified through various ultrasonographic methods. Dokgöz said, “Many types of cancer progress in the body without causing any symptoms, and symptoms become apparent towards the final stages. Ultrasound images are used to investigate the presence of a disease agent, and ancillary tests are used to take precautions against possible diseases.”

WHAT ULTRASOUND EXAMS ARE USED IN EARLY DIAGNOSIS?

Dokgöz stated that cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and hypertension, which develop over time, can be eliminated with early diagnosis. He added, “Various ultrasound exams are used to detect many types of cancer in their early stages and prevent them from occurring,” and listed the ultrasound exams:

Breast ultrasound: This exam examines breast tissue, milk ducts, and breast cells. The purpose of an ultrasound is to investigate the cause of pain or lumps in the breast or chest in women over 40. While mammography is generally performed, a breast ultrasound is used for definitive diagnosis.

Pelvic ultrasound: In women, the bladder, uterus, and ovaries are examined, and in men, the bladder and prostate. This examination allows for a detailed examination of fibroids, chocolate cysts, and ovarian cysts in women, and urinary tract infections, distal ureteral stones, and bladder stones in men. Following the examination, precautions are taken against uterine cancer, cervical cancer, prostate and bladder cancers, and related diseases.

Renal ultrasound: This examination performs a detailed kidney scan. The patient lies on their back, and a gel is applied to the abdominal area. During this stage, the kidneys are examined with an ultrasound probe. The renal ducts, kidneys, and bladder are examined.

Thyroid ultrasound: This is performed to detect abnormalities, goiter, or nodules in the thyroid gland. The ultrasound probe is placed in the neck area to perform imaging. The thyroid glands in the neck area are examined.

Hip ultrasound: This is used to examine congenital hip dislocation. This ultrasound, performed in babies between 2 and 6 months of age, checks for the presence of Developmental Hip Dysplasia (DDH).
